The mystery surrounding Sarah Palin
Ever since she appeared on the nation’s political stage in late August of 2008, Sarah Palin has been the most controversial and vilified person in America. When then Republican Presidential candidate John McCain asked the until then little known governor of Alaska to be his running mate, she had about one to two good weeks after that while she gave her Vice Presidential acceptance speech and introduced herself to America.
To many, it was refreshing to witness a person so honest and real, a true rarity in today’s world of politics where every word gets measured and polled by politicians. She generated a groundswell of enthusiasm among conservatives and for a short time, the polls indicated that John McCain had moved slightly ahead of rival Barack Obama during the first couple of weeks last September. To most people, it appeared obvious that it was Sarah Palin whose candidacy as Vice-President on the Republican ticket was the real reason for this change in the polls. We tend to fully agree with that assessment.
But that all changed when the liberal media regrouped and began attacking Sarah Palin, her family and everything she believed in and stood for. She was taken to task during some prime time interviews by Charlie Gibson (ABC) and Katy Couric (CBS) while the television networks and other groups sent great numbers of investigators (including attorneys) to Alaska to get the ‘dirt’ on Sarah Palin and they reported on rumors and statements made by anybody willing to spout off. It was ugly to say the least. And it continued throughout the remainder of the campaign. Then came November 4, 2008 and Barack Obama won. While there is disagreement, we here at this site believe that Sarah Palin’s name on the Republican ticket added millions of votes without which, McCain would have suffered a defeat of major proportions. But that is all history.
After the election, Sarah Palin went back to Alaska and resumed her duties as the governor of that state. One would think that the attacks against her would diminish now if not stop altogether. She had been a real threat to liberals in America – she opposed abortion, wow – but then Obama, their poster boy, won and it should have ended with that. Think again, Sarah Palin continued to be attacked in the media and liberal interest groups in her official capacity as governor as well as in her private life. Over twenty lawsuits were filed against her for alleged ethnic violations and so on (all having been proven to be false and baseless). We cannot think of any person in public life to ever having been maligned in such vicious way as Mrs. Palin has been. Even former President Richard Nixon was left alone after his resignation in disgrace in 1974.
Not only was she falsely accused of wrong doings in office, she was also described as dumb, incoherent, socially unacceptable and even devious without any proof of that. As the old saying goes: “Had she walked on water, they would have accused her of not being able to swim.” Needless to say, the continued attacks on her affected her work as governor in that she had to spent endless hours with attorneys defending herself against these frivolous lawsuits, besides it cost her personally a lot of money. Finally, she must have reached a point where she felt it was better for herself and her family to resign the governorship and turn the job over to her Lieutenant Governor. When she announced her decision in early July, she was attacked by people on both sides of the political spectrum for being a ‘quitter’. It appears that whatever she does, she cannot do right by the pundits of America. It is almost mythical what is happening when it comes to Sarah Palin.
What we do not understand is this: If she is such a dumb and naive person, if she is so unprepared for political office, if her actions and achievements are so minimal, why continue the attacks on her? Why continue to malign and viciously critique her and continue to second guess what she might do in the future? There is only one common sense answer to these questions: They must be afraid of her, it’s that simple! And it is telling that those that scream the loudest must be the ones that are utterly scared of her and what she might do in the future. Any other explanation of this behavior by the liberal and also conservative talking heads makes no sense at all and is nothing but spin.
One more comment in all this: The trophy for most disgraceful and unappreciative person in all this should go to John McCain. He benefited substantially from her being on his ticket last year but when it came to defending her against all these cruel and baseless attacks, he could not be heard nor be seen. It was especially troubling to us when she was maligned by former McCain campaign staffers after the loss and even blamed for their defeat. John McCain was AWOL. So much for the life-long image of war hero, his silence at those critical moments was deafening. He should be ashamed and seriously consider full-time retirement.
What the future will hold for Sarah Palin, only time will tell. We only know one thing for sure: Whatever she does and says from now on, she will be viciously attacked, unfairly criticized and smeared by political pundits, most certainly by all the liberals but also by most conservatives and moderates. She must be a real threat to these people, it’s truly a mystery to us and we will keep watching.
