Devious Schemers in the Senate
Despite economic bad times in America, the country is still getting into the holiday season with all its traditional activities: Shopping for Christmas, buying gifts for loved ones and friends, giving to charities and volunteering time to help the needy and so on. Together with the regular daily routines, it keeps everybody fairly busy and little time is there to stay on top of what our so called ‘elected representatives’ are doing in Congress.
Well, they are very busy too. The Democrats in the United States Senate are working feverishly on a healthcare reform bill in the hope of finishing it before the holiday recess. Since there is a lot of work to be done to achieve this artificial deadline, they are working through weekends. One would think that with 58 Democrats and two Independents, thus having a 60 vote majority to begin and to end debate (by their procedures) this should not be this hard but that is not the case. In fact, there is some serious division among the Democrats over several major components of this legislation.
In comparison, the 40 Republican Senators cannot stop whatever the Democrats determine the final outcome to be but they are still submitting amendment after amendment to make changes to the proposed bill. So far, every one of these amendments has been defeated and yet, Democrat Senate Leader Harry Reid has portrayed the Republicans as Naysayers without any ideas and even compared them to the politicians who were against the abolition of slavery.
This is outright devious and shameful! The other devious element in the Democrats activities is the fact that they want to do this at a time when they think the public is not watching since they are all so busy before the holidays with other things and can therefore be ignored before they vote on the final Senate bill, the Democrats that is and now we understand why they are working even through weekends. The plan seems to be: Let’s get this done before the public becomes aware of what we did. This is politics of the worst kind and we have to ask: Why are you doing this? We know for whom they are doing it, namely, the President of the United States. They, the Democrats want him to achieve a major campaign promise – healthcare reform – and they realize that if they do not do this now, that is right now, they will never get another shot at it.
Their almost fanatical obsession with passing this legislation is sickening when one considers that they are elected representatives of the people and should not go against the majority of the voters in our country. It appears almost as if they have a death wish and do not care if they get re-elected, they want this done and they do not care by what means and schemes they get it done. Even if it means to get there under the cover of darkness (working through weekends) and whether or not this legislative monster meets the approval of the voting public. They believe so desperately in the power of government that they will do at this time anything to reach their goal, consequences be damned!
We here at Common Sense University do not know what will happen in the end but we know one thing for certain: It is NOT good for America; it is not good for our country!
