Until the Mid-term elections on November 2, we will write on a number of issues and the important a role they play in what is at stake on that day. One of the major ones is the issue of TAXES! It is important to understand where we have been during the years since 2001 and 2003 when Congress and then-President G.W. Bush enacted reductions on all Federal income taxes, period. This resulted in millions of Americans no longer having to pay this tax and it allowed all income earners in this country to pay less. There were many other tax reductions as well such as the Estate tax, Capital gains tax and many more. The only problem with those laws was that they were term-limited. In other words, they are all due to expire at midnight this December 31, 2010.
First of all, we here at Common Sense University believe that this was a major flaw and should never have happened. No, we do not mean the lowered tax rates but the term-limitation attached to those so called ‘Bush-Tax cuts’. That is in our opinion a major fault in what is wrong in Washington D.C. The apparent horse trading under the misnomer called negotiations. It shows the gutlessness of our Representatives in Congress and we fault President Bush as well in that he failed to beat the drum in those years and tell the American people that these reductions were only good for these past years up until now. He probably felt that he would no longer be in office and could not be held accountable what future Presidents and Congresses did. We shudder to think about the question: ‘What if the Founding Fathers had given us a Constitution valid for example for only one hundred years?’ We believe that laws should be made permanent. Congress and the President have the power to repeal them or replace them; they should not make laws that are only good for a few years. The only thing “term-limited” should be the years an individual can be serving in Congress (House and Senate). We have this limit for Presidencies, why not also for lawmakers?
The time for a decision on these laws has now come and one of the major debates currently is whether or not to let these ‘Bush’ tax cuts expire or not. One thing is certain, if Congress does nothing, every income earner will pay more in taxes come January 1, 2011, period!!! Common sense tells us that it is very detrimental to raise taxes by letting the current lower tax rates expire during economic hard times (a recession) in that it gives consumers less money to spend and makes an economic recovery less likely. It is important to fully understand that doing nothing (on the part of Congress) is the equivalent of raising taxes. Yet the Democrats from the President on down tell us that they are against raising taxes. They are controlling Congress at least until early January of next year and their inaction will result in increased tax rates for all Americans. But, they claim, they are against raising taxes. This is typical ‘Washington double-speak’. They should be called on that every time they appear in public and open their mouths during the next weeks of campaigning.
But they do have a plan they say: The Democrats (the President and the Democrat majority in Congress) want to extend the tax cuts for all people earning less than $250,000.00 per year for a not yet determined number of years. But the rich, these ‘evil’ creatures that earn so much money should pay more in taxes and their tax rates should be increased and the easiest way to do this is to let their current rates expire by the end of 2010. The Republican are against this in that they believe that All tax rates including the ones for the wealthy in America should be extended. The Republicans correctly claim that it is the ‘rich’ who create jobs and that is what this country needs more than anything else in today‘s economy. The Democrats respond by calling the Republicans “the party of No” and hope that people believe that. It is, of course, a totally false claim but their class warfare strategies have worked in the past and they hope it will work once again.
And to be honest, we think it might work in that the millions of ignoramuses and liberal leaning people of America will believe this and they will shut their ears and minds to rational thinking, also known as common sense. This problem can only be solved by not re-electing Democrats who hold these beliefs, it’s that simple! It is high time for the country as a whole to wake up and come to realize that the Democrats’ belief of ‘Government is the solution’ is so totally flawed and that we better end their ruling role in Washington D.C.
